Setting up a Japanese Keyboard with Windows 11
On a Windows 11 computer with a default language set to English, in order to use the 全角 (or "zenkaku" to switch from Roman to Kana) and 無変換 ("muhenkan" or "no conversion" key on your JIS keyboard, you will need to:
- Add Japanese as an alternate language in in the Time & Language > Language & Region Settings pane
- Then remove English as a preferred language.
The keys are not activated if you have English set as the default language and Japanese as the secondary language. As a long time Mac user this seems counterintuitive as you should be able to switch between the two input methods and the keyboard should be detected as such but this is my first time using a JIS keyboard (with a PC).
